Venturi Gas Scrubbing

Venturi gas washing is a wet scrubbing process in which direct contact occurs between the gas to be washed and the liquid medium. The process derives its name from the Venturi effect, where a liquid's velocity increases as the area through which it flows decreases.
How does venturi gas washing work?
In Venturi gas washing, the gas to be washed flows through a channel that narrows in cross-section, causing the gas speed to increase. Water or other wash liquids are typically sprayed axially into the narrowest part of the channel, known as the throat. The spray measurement is adjusted to the cross-section of the channel. The shear forces exerted on the droplets by the turbulent high-velocity air quickly atomize the water and provide effective mixing, allowing for better contact between gas and liquid. These conditions lead to a very efficient collection of particles and can be used for specific gas washing applications. The high-speed axial spray can draw the gas flow through this washing section, making additional fans or blowers for gas displacement unnecessary. Downstream of the narrow section, the channel expands back to its original size.
