Gas scrubbing for cleaner gas streams

The generation of renewable fuels, for example from biogas or through combustion processes, produces gas streams that may contain contaminants such as dust particles, acidic components, or other unwanted substances. Gas scrubbers are used to remove these contaminants from the gas stream by bringing it into contact with a scrubbing liquid. A well-functioning gas scrubber contributes to lower emissions, more stable process operation, and less wear on installation components further down the process.

The effectiveness of gas scrubbing depends heavily on the contact between gas and liquid: the better the scrubbing liquid is distributed, the larger the contact surface and the more efficiently contaminants can be captured. In packed columns, for example, axial swirl nozzles ensure even distribution over the packing surface, so that no gas flows through the packing untreated. Munters contributes with mist eliminators that effectively separate any liquid droplets from the cleaned gas stream, preventing liquid loss and contamination further down the process.

Gas cooling for safe and efficient processes

Gas streams in the renewable fuels sector can reach very high temperatures, for example during combustion processes or the treatment of flue gases. If these gases are not cooled in time, this can damage installations or disrupt processes further down the chain. In evaporative gas cooling, also known as quenching, water mist is injected into the hot gas. The water evaporates, drawing energy from the gas, which cools it rapidly.

The finer the water is atomized, the greater the surface area of the droplets and the faster the evaporation, and therefore the cooling. BETE supplies nozzles designed to achieve this fine atomization, even under high temperatures and demanding process conditions such as corrosive gas streams. By combining nozzles and spray lances, gas cooling can be precisely tailored to the desired temperature range, the available flow rate, and the space within the installation, helping to prevent equipment damage and unplanned downtime.

Air humidification for optimal process conditions

Within renewable fuels installations, humidity often affects the efficiency and reliability of the process. Air that is too dry, for example, can lead to increased sensitivity to dust or static electricity, while correct humidity contributes to more stable process conditions and less equipment failure. Air humidification ensures that the amount of water vapor in the air is increased to the desired level.

Inlet cooling for more efficient power generation

A specific and valuable application within the renewable fuels sector is inlet cooling of gas turbines, also known as Turbine Inlet Air Cooling. Warm air is less dense than cold air, which means the capacity of a gas turbine can decrease significantly at high temperatures — precisely at moments when demand for electricity is high, such as during hot summer days. By cooling the turbine's inlet air through evaporation, air density increases and the turbine can perform closer to its rated capacity again.
